Cleaning the toilet is one of those tasks a lot of people cringe at. People want to run away and wish they didn’t have to clean the toilet. Unfortunately, cleaning the toilet is compulsory to prevent bacteria from growing in your toilet.
But truthfully once you have the right products, tools, techniques including a good pair of rubber gloves just in case you feel really irritated, it makes cleaning the toilet less intimidating.
How often should you clean a toilet?
When you clean a toilet you reduce the risk of having germs in your home. Immediately after each use of the toilet, it is prone to hosting bacteria and viruses on its surface. So, always try and clean it often.
You can do a quick clean by using disinfecting wipes and clean all around the toilet, not forgetting the handle and lid. Then for a good deep clean, you can do it once or twice a week depending on how you use the toilet.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO CLEAN A TOILET LIKE A PROFESSIONAL
Toilet Bowl Cleaner: You can use any kind of toilet bowl cleaner. This goes specifically in the toilet bowl under the rim.
Toilet Bowl Brush: For washing the toilet.
Toothbrush: Use a separate toothbrush for your bathroom, you can use an old one or an entirely new one. The toothbrush helps get into those areas your hands can’t.
Rubber Gloves: This is not compulsory, but to feel a bit comfortable to go all-in with your cleaning you can use this. Try to color coordinate your gloves depending on the area you use them to clean. This is to avoid contaminating your gloves or you can certainly use disposable gloves.
Distilled White Vinegar: This helps in disinfecting and removing hard water stains and stains in general.
Disinfecting Cleaner: You can use any disinfecting cleaner of your choice. You can also do a homemade cleaner.
For this recipe, you use 1 teaspoon of dish soap, water, and distilled white vinegar. You can add any essential oil of your choice if you want any scent.
Paper Towel: I prefer using paper towels to a microfibre cloth because I feel irritated cleaning the toilet with a cloth and reusing it. But with a paper towel, you can dispose of it immediately after use.
BEST WAY TO CLEAN A TOILET
STEP 1: GLOVE UP AND PRE-TREAT
Before you start cleaning get all your products and tools ready for work. Remember to always keep your toilet cleaning supplies separate from other cleaning supplies you use around the house.
So put your gloves on so you feel brave enough to clean. Next, remove everything you keep close to the toilet, this is to prevent splashing the cleaner or water on them. Flush the toilet with the lid down before you start cleaning.
Grab your disinfecting cleaner and spray the toilet, spray from the top to the bottom and also the floor around the toilet. Do not forget the lid, flusher, and toilet base.
Then you let the cleaner sit for about 20-30 minutes so the product can do its disinfecting work.
To clean a toilet tank, first cut off the water flow and take off the lid to check inside. If there is no mineral build-up use a scrub brush and the disinfecting spray to wash the tank.
But if there is mineral buildup pour distilled vinegar into the tank. Allow it to soak for some minutes before you flush the toilet. Then you can go over with a scrub brush and the disinfecting spray. Turn on the water and flush as many times as the tank is clean.
STEP 2: START WIPING DOWN
Before you start wiping down your toilet, grab your toilet bowl cleaner and pour it into the toilet bowl. Start from underneath the rim, this is important because there are tiny water jets underneath the rims that you cant see.
You should let the toilet bowl cleaner sit for some minutes so it can break down any limescale, dirt, and bacteria.
Pro Tip: Before you put the toilet bowl cleaner, use a plunger to force excess water out from the toilet. This helps exposes more of the bowl and it allows you to get better cleaning action when you use the toilet bowl brush.

So, use your paper towel and wipe in a steady consistent manner, that way you don’t miss any spot. You should be changing the paper towel often and pay particular attention to the points of contact like the lid and handle.
For the little nooks and corners, the paper towel will not do the job well. You have to use the toothbrush, just apply the cleaner to the brush and scrub the areas. Next, you use the paper towel to wipe down where you just cleaned.
Do not forget the base of the toilet it also needs some love, also the area the toilet meets the floor. That place can get dirty too, just use the toothbrush to clean the area and wipe it down with a paper towel. Also, the toilet floor should be wipe down too.
STEP 3: CLEAN THE TOILET BOWL
This is how you clean a toilet bowl, take your brush and start right underneath the bowl because of the water jets. There can be a lot of buildup from hard water or bacteria so you need to be scrubbing it.
After cleaning around the rim you can start going down to the bottom. If there are toilet bowl stains you can’t get rid of, use a pumice stone to remove them. Just wet the stone with a little water, then scrub out any difficult stains in the toilet.
Finally, flush your toilet, keep the toilet brush inside while flushing to rinse it off. Then let your toilet brush drip dry by using the toilet lid to hold it in place. When it is completely dry keep the brush in its position and your toilet will be sparkling.
